Connecting to the Land

Congratulations on your acceptance to this professional development program offered in collaboration between Inside Education and HOWL. This is one night, field based program designed to provide rich and immersive experiences to help you better understand how to engage in meaningful place-based learning with your classes, and how to teach about the natural world while honoring both Western and Indigenous worldviews. Here are all the details you need to help you plan for this one-of-a-kind learning adventure that will inform and inspire your teaching!

DATES, TIMES, & LOCATION
October 24 - 25, 2024

The program takes place at the Biogeoscience Institute (BGI) in Kananaskis Country, 80 km west of Calgary. (MAP). The BGI is located at the base of Baldy Mountain, next to Barrier Lake, approximately 10 km south of the Trans-Canada Highway along Highway 40 in Kananaskis Country. 

Program Start: Thursday, October 24 - Check in from 5:00 - 6:00pm. Biogeosciences Institute Barrier Lake Station, Kananaskis, AB (registration desk opens at 5:00 pm)

Program End: Friday, October 25th - 5:00 pm

*Inside Education will cover all program costs including meals and accommodations during the program. Inside Education will provide a travel & supply teacher subsidy, if required. Please review our subsidy policy here.

**Participants are responsible for coordinating their own travel to and from BGI - Barrier Lake Station.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Accommodations are provided on Thursday October 24 at BGI Main Lodge. Accommodations at the Biogeosciences Institute (BGI) are dormitory style, with shared rooms, bunk beds, and shared washrooms. See their website for more details here

FOOD
Inside Education will provide all meals starting with supper on the 24th and ending with lunch on the 25th. We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions, so please indicate your food preferences on the participant details form. The dining room at BGI is nut-free, and caters to vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free (please note, gluten products are used in the kitchen). They are unable to cater for Kosher or Halal, air-born allergies, and extreme dietary restrictions, in those cases we ask that the participant bring prepared meals that can be heated on-site by kitchen staff. Participants can bring healthy snacks for their own use and can be stored in the common fridge in the lodge. We ask that participants refrain from bringing any nut products.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • Pack your smile and your suitcase! Check out this generalized packing list for some key things you might want to have with you - we program rain, snow or shine with the exception of unsafe conditions. It will be cold in the mountains in October, participants need to be prepared for all mountain weather conditions and we recommend toque, mittens, and warm layers.
  • We expect that participants will travel with the group and attend the full program from start to finish, so please plan accordingly. 
  • Cell phone coverage at BGI and Kananaskis Area is not reliable. There is Wifi available in some of the buildings at BGI.

Forestry Teacher PD for B.Ed Students and Beginning Teachers!

Congratulations on your acceptance to Inside Education’s Professional Development Program. Here are all the details you need to help you plan for this one-of-a-kind learning adventure that will inform and inspire your teaching! 

DATES, TIMES, & LOCATION
September 26-28, 2024

Program Start: Thursday, September 26th - 12:00 pm - Whitemud Equine Centre Classroom, Edmonton, AB (registration and lunch will be from 11:00-12:00 am, and the program will commence at 12:00 pm)

Program End: Saturday, September 18th - 3:00 pm - Whitemud Equine Centre Classroom, Edmonton, AB

*Inside Education will cover all program costs including meals and accommodations during the program.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

Participants are responsible for coordinating their own travel to and from Edmonton.


If you are traveling from Calgary or Red Deer to Edmonton, depending on demand, transportation may be available for you. More information will be sent out closer to the PD starting date.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Inside Education will provide accommodations for both nights of the program in Hinton. We will be staying in same-gender double occupancy rooms, but we may be able to accommodate a single occupancy room if required.

Inside Education will provide all meals starting with lunch on the 26th and ending with lunch on the 28th. We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions, so please indicate your food preferences on the participant details form.

For those traveling greater than 150 km, Inside Education has a travel subsidy of up to $500 to help offset the costs of travel - the subsidy can be used towards flights, car rentals, taxis, and/or shuttles.
