The oil sands create direct and indirect jobs across the country and these employment opportunities are expected to grow. Educators have a unique role in supporting students as they investigate the myriad of options available to them; exploring everything from post-secondary education to finding the career path best suited to their skills, talents and interests . This program is designed for career counsellors, teachers and administrators from across western Canada to gain knowledge and resources to engage the next generation workforce on the opportunities and challenges working in the energy sector.
The 2015 Western Canada Oil Sands Careers Program is a career education experience! You will meet with experts, participate in tours and gain day-in-the-life experiences that will give you invaluable context that you can share with your students!
- Hear directly from people living and working in the oil sands region
- Develop a better understanding of topics and issues that shape Alberta’s oil sands
- Broaden your understanding of the oil sands resource with behind-the-scenes tours of research sites, extraction facilities and reclamation areas
- Participate in a job shadowing experience
- Stay overnight at a Northern Alberta Work Lodge
- Discuss post-secondary and training options for your students
- Network with career experts and like-minded educators
**This program is open to teachers and career educators from across Western Canada.
Successful applicants will be provided a full scholarship to attend the program. Your food, program travel, accommodations and all facility tours and workshops are all included in the scholarship.
Application Deadline: September 21, 2015
Participants will be notified of their application status by September 25, 2015
Program Start: Sunday October 18 ~7:00 pm in Fort McMurray
Program End: Wednesday October 21 ~ 4 pm in Edmonton
Inside Education provides all transportation during the program but participants are responsible for booking and coordinating their own travel to and from the program start and end locations.
Participants traveling >500km from the starting location will be provided a maximum of $600 to cover the cost of economy class flights, receipts must be provided. You are welcome to go directly to Fort McMurray to start the program or travel with Inside Education from Edmonton.
*This program does not qualify for a supply teacher subsidy.
